Former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has been named the new manager at Espanyol, it was announced on Wednesday.

Aguirre takes over for Mauricio Pochettino, who left the club by "mutual consent" on Monday after four years in charge.

In addition to his coaching duties with the Mexican national team, Aguirre has spent time in charge of La Liga sides Osasuna, Atletico Madrid and Real Zaragoza.

In Espanyol, Aguirre inherits a team that sits on the bottom of the league with nine points from 13 games and his first match as coach of the team will come Sunday at fellow relegation strugglers Granada.
