Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.) had a two-run total of 1:40.93 to finish first in the women's skeleton world cup race on Nov. 16 in Park City, Utah. The two-time Olympian narrowly edged Elizabeth Yarnold of Great Britain (1:40.94) to secure her first world cup victory since 2008.
A FAST START
Heather Richardson (Salt Lake City, Utah) paced the U.S., collecting three medals at the first long track world cup event of the season, which ran from Nov. 16-18 in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Richardson took second place in both women's 500-meter races, before capping off the Essent ISU World Cup by winning gold in the 1,000 with a time of 1:15.27.
CYCLING
Tim Johnson (Topsfield, Mass.) won the second and third races at the Jingle Cross Rock, which ran from Nov. 16-18 in Iowa City, Iowa. Johnson climbed into fifth place in the Pro CX men's standings with 437 total points.
Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.) finished 10th in the women's omnium at the UCI Track World Cup on Nov. 18 in Glasgow, Scotland.
EQUESTRIAN
In his final round, Karl Cook (Santa Cruz, Calif.) piloted Johnkeer Z to the only double clear of the event to secure the top-two spots at the Fisker Automotive World Cup Grand Prix, which ran from Nov. 17-18 in Las Vegas. Within a two-day span, Cook earned four top finishes aboard four separate horses.
BOBSLED/SKELETON
The U.S. had a one-two world cup finish in the two-man bobsled for the second consecutive week. Pilot Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah) and brakeman Curt Tomasevicz (Shelby, Neb.) took top honors with a time of 1:37.40, while Cory Butner (Yucaipa, Calif.) and Chuck Berkeley (Walnut Creek, Calif.) slid to second on Nov. 17 in Park City, Utah. The U.S. four-man bobsled team earned silver to cap off the world cup event. Pilot Holcomb and his push crew of Steve Langton (Melrose, Mass.), Justin Olsen (San Antonio, Texas) and Tomasevicz had a combined time of 1:36.38, falling just short of the Russia's two-run total of 1:36.26.
The U.S. earned 11 medals in the second North American Cup stop, which ran from Nov. 15-17 in Calgary, Alberta. Junior bobsled pilot Codie Bascue (Whitehall, N.Y.) won three of the four events. He teamed up with Chris Langton (Melrose, Mass.) to win his first gold medal in the first two-man competition. In the second two-man event, Bascue earned gold with brakeman Sam Michener (Sioux Falls, S.D.). His final gold came in the four-man bobsled, where he was the pilot. Meanwhile, Katelyn Kelly (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Ida Bernstein (Cockeysville, Md.) led the women, teaming up for both a gold and a silver medal.
FENCING
Margaret Lu (Greenwich, Conn.) outlasted a field of 134 competitors to claim her second junior world cup title on Nov. 18 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Lee clinched gold against Russia's Adelina Zagidullina, 15-10, to mark her sixth straight direct elimination victory.
Skyla Powers (Decatur, Ga.) earned a bronze medal in the Junior Saber World Cup on Nov. 17 in Sosnowiec, Poland. Powers was one touch short of fencing for gold after her 15-14 loss to Russia's Mariya Ridel. A day later, Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.) picked up a bronze medal for the U.S. in the men's competition.
FIELD HOCKEY
The U.S. Men's National Team outscored its opponents, 24-0, en route to a pair of victories at the World League Round 1, which ran from Nov. 17-18 in Chula Vista, Calif. The U.S. opened play with a convincing 16-0 victory over Guatemala before grabbing an 8-0 victory against Mexico.
FIGURE SKATING
Ashley Wagner (Alexandria, Va.) spun her way to a season-best score of 127.54 in the free skate to claim her second grand prix title of the season on Nov. 17 in Paris. On the men's side, Jeremy Abbott earned his first Trophee Bompard medal, totaling 227.63 points to finish second.
JUDO
Hannah Martin finished second in the women's 63 kg./139 lbs. division at the IJF World Cup event on Nov. 17 in Apia, Samoa.
RACQUETBALL
Jordan Barth and Justus Benson won the boys' 14 doubles title at the IRF World Junior Championships, which ran from Nov. 11-17 in Los Angeles.
RUGBY
The U.S. women's team secured a 34-20 victory over Italy thanks to a first-half shutout in the first-ever meeting between the two countries on Nov. 18 in Rome.
SAILING
Sarah Newberry (Miami, Fla.) and Kenny Pierce (Hialeah, Fla.) collected 14 wins in 14 races to win the 2012 U.S. Multihull Championship on Nov. 18 in Pensacola, Fla. With the victory, Newberry made history by becoming the first female skipper to claim the title.
SOCCER
The U.S. Men's National Team closed the 2012 season with a 2-2 draw against Russia on Nov. 14 in Krasnodar, Russia. Mix Diskerud (Oslo, Norway) and Michael Bradley (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each tallied goals for Team USA in the international friendly match. The U.S. finished its 2012 campaign with a 9-2-3 record.
SQUASH
The U.S. women defeated the Czech Republic, 2-0, to finish 13th at the 2012 Women's World Team Championships, which ran from Nov. 12-17 in Nimes, France. Team USA concluded the tournament with a 3-3 overall record.
VOLLEYBALL
It was a U.S. final in the women's NORECA Beach Circuit final, as Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) faced Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Tracyln Weamer (Upland, Calif.) on Nov. 18 in Mission Beach, Trinidad. Summer and Day - the favorites heading into the tournament - outlasted their counterparts to earn a 21-17, 21-15 victory. On the men's side, Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) bested Nicaragua's duo of Gerald Umana and Henry Hernandez in straight sets, 21-10, 21-11, to capture gold.
WATER SKIING
Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.) won the inaugural Chile Night Jump on Nov. 17 in San Bernardo, Chile. Kruger soared 215 feet to edge Chile's Rodrigo Miranda's 211-foot jump.
WRESTLING
Three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers won gold medals at the 2012 Haparanda Cup on Nov. 18 in Haparanda, Sweden. The U.S. individual champions were Nate Engel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 55 kg./121 lbs., Joe Betterman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 60 kg./132 lbs. and Andy Bisek (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 74 kg./163 lbs.
