Switzerland striker Alexander Frei will retire at the end of the club season from Basel, ending a career that includes a record 42 goals in 84 appearances for his country.

The 33-year-old Frei debuted for Switzerland in 2001 and played for his nation through 2011. He is currently in his second stint with FC Basel in Switzerland and has 69 goals in 96 appearances since rejoining the club in 2009.

He started his career with Basel from 1997-98 and also enjoyed memorable stops with Rennes in France and Borussia Dortmund in Germany. Frei had 47 goals over 100 appearances with Rennes and 34 goals in 74 games for Dortmund.

Frei also played for FC Thun, FC Luzern and Servette FC in Switzerland.

On the international level, Frei played in Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.
