The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Bill Livesey as senior adviser to general manager Neal Huntington.

The 72-year-old Livesey worked most recently as a scout with the Yankees from 2008-11, his second stint with the Y team. He also worked with the organization from 1978-95, holding several positions, including vice president of player development and scouting.

The Pirates finished 79-83 last season, enduring a horrific collapse in which they stumbled from 16 games over. 500 in August to their 20th straight losing season. Owner Bob Nutting opted to keep the management team intact but also pledged to make any changes he felt would help Pittsburgh contend for the postseason in 2013.

Livesey, whose son Jeff was Pittsburgh's minor league hitting coordinator the last two seasons, has also worked with the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.
