The Kansas City Royals claimed pitcher Chris Volstad off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Volstad, 26, made 21 starts for the Cubs in 2012, his lone campaign in the Windy City after playing parts of the previous four seasons with the Marlins. He compiled a 3-12 record with a 6.31 earned run average for Chicago.

A 2005 first-round pick by the Marlins, the right-hander reached the majors three years later, going 6-4 with a 2.88 ERA. From 2009-11, Volstad went 26-35 with a 4.88 ERA in 88 starts.
