Canizares, Hendry share lead in Perth

Perth, Western Australia – Alejandro Canizares and Michael Hendry posted matching 7-under 65s on Thursday and they share the lead after the opening round of the inaugural Perth International.

Canizares has one European Tour win and that happened at the 2006 Russian Open. Hendry is looking for his first tour win.

Emiliano Grillo is alone in third place at minus-6. Paul Casey and Andrew Johnston share fourth at 5-under 67 at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.

Australian Greg Chalmers is among six players tied for sixth at minus-4.

Canizares converted back-to-back birdie chances at three and four, where he chipped in, to get his round going. After a pair of pars, he sank a birdie effort at the seventh and made it two in a row with a birdie at the eighth.

The Spaniard birdied two holes in a row for a third time as he birdied Nos. 11 and 12.

Canizares parred his next four holes before sinking his last birdie try at the par-3 17th. He parred the last to close out a bogey-free round.

"It was a good round. I hit the ball really well and made some putts, so I'm really happy," said Canizares, who has two top-10s in 24 starts this season. "I was pretty steady the whole round and gave myself plenty of chances. I think I only missed two greens in the whole round."

Hendry birdied the first, but gave that shot right back as he bogeyed the second. He parred the next three holes before getting back into red figures with a birdie on No. 6.

The New Zealander poured in three straight birdies from the ninth to jump to minus-4.

Hendry birdied the 14th, 16th and 18th, the final three par-4s, to grab a share of the lead.

"I actually shot 65 in the Pro-Am yesterday as well," Hendry stated. "I think around here, if you can hit your drives in the right place, you can give yourself lots of opportunities to hit it close with wedges. I hit my driver pretty well and wedged it well and putted it well."

NOTES: World No. 10 Jason Dufner, the highest-ranked player in the field, carded a 1-under 71 and is tied for 29th. Fellow American Bo Van Pelt shares 13th at minus-2...Former Masters champ Charl Schwartzel is among 17 players tied with Dufner at minus-1...This the first of seven straight events outside of Europe to close the 2012 season.
