London, England – Jose Maria Olazabal said he won't captain the next European Ryder Cup team after guiding this year's squad to a memorable comeback victory over the United States this past weekend.
The Europeans stared at a 10-6 deficit on Sunday at Medinah in suburban Chicago and staged an incredible rally in singles play to retain the Cup with a 14 1/2 - 13 1/2 triumph.
Asked if he would captain the team again, Olazabal said no.
"I won't do it again," Olazabal said at a news conference after the team arrived in England at Heathrow Airport. "It's really tough on your nerves, but that's the beauty of the Ryder Cup."
Olazabal said there are plenty of other worthy candidates to lead Europe in its Cup defense two years from now at Gleneagles in Scotland. He indicated that vice captains Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley were among those deserving of the honor.
"There's a bunch of guys... we have a list of eight, nine, 10 guys and there are only a certain number of Ryder Cups in the next few years," Olazabal added. "I think all of those guys deserve that position."
Others he said that merited consideration in the future included Paul Lawrie, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington.
The next European Ryder Cup captain will likely be chosen early in 2013.
