New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira could return to the lineup Monday after recovering from a left calf strain.

Teixeira had been on a rehab assignment in Tampa and hasn't played for the Yankees since Sept. 8. He is expected to be examined by doctors in New York on Monday and could be in the lineup for the opener of a three-game game series against Boston.

"He'll see the doctor (Monday) and we'll see if he's cleared to play," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi prior to Sunday's game against the Blue Jays. "I'll talk to him first to see if (he can play) first or DH."

The switch-hitting slugger first injured his calf in an Aug. 27 game against Toronto, then missed 10 games before returning in Baltimore. He aggravated the injury in his first game back, diving into first base while trying to beat out a double-play grounder that ended the contest. Replays showed he was safe and the tying run would have scored.

Teixeira is hitting .255 in 120 games with 23 homers and 81 runs batted in this season.

Girardi also said infielder Jayson Nix will be sidelined 10-to-14 days with a Grade 1 strain of the left hip flexor. Nix was sent back to New York for tests on Saturday.
