Cavani PK helps Napoli keep pace

Napoli kept pace with Juventus atop the Serie A table thanks to Edinson Cavani's penalty kick, which lifted the club to a 1-0 defeat of Sampdoria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday.

Sampdoria staved off a great deal of pressure from the visitors, but the break through came midway through the second half when Daniele Gastaldello was sent off for denying a clear scoring opportunity in the box.

Cavani converted the ensuing kick for his league-leading sixth goal of the season.

Napoli improves to 16 points through six league games to go level with Juventus at the Serie A summit. Juve holds the top spot on goal differential after picking up a 4-1 win over Roma on Saturday.

Sampdoria remains on 10 points through six games after suffering its first loss of the season.

Palermo 4, Chievo 1

Palermo, Italy - Fabrizio Miccoli's hat trick helped Palermo pick up its first win of the season with a 4-1 defeat of Chievo at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Sunday.

Miccoli's opener was canceled out by Marco Rigoni in the 27th minute, but the Italian striker restored Palermo's lead in the 59th minute.

Franco Brienza's red card in the 62nd minute reduced Palermo to 10 men, but Luigi Giorgi and Miccoli scored within the final 10 minutes to lift the home side to a resounding victory.

Palermo moves out of the relegation zone by improving to four points on the season and going one point ahead of Chievo.

Lazio 2, Siena 1

Rome, Italy - Lazio put a halt to a two-game losing skid on Sunday by earning a 2-1 win over Siena at the Stadio Olimpico.

Honorato Campos Ederson and a penalty kick from Cristian Ledesma gave Lazio a two-goal lead by the halftime break. Massimo Paci pulled one back for Siena in second-half stoppage time, but it proved to be nothing more than consolation goal.

Lazio moves back into the top-three with 12 points through six games while Siena goes second from bottom with just two points on the season.

Torino 5, Atalanta 1

Bergamo, Italy - Atalanta took an early lead but surrendered five unanswered goals in a disappointing 5-1 home loss to Torino on Sunday.

The home side got off to a bright start when German Denis opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but Rolando Bianchi converted a penalty 10 minutes later to send the two sides into the halftime break even.

Torino answered in the second half with four goals in the span of 14 minutes as goals from Alessandro Gazzi, Alan Stevanovic, Danilo D'Ambrosio and Bianchi sealed an emphatic win for the visitors and extend the club's unbeaten streak to three games.

Atalanta has lost two straight to remain stuck on five points.

Bologna 4, Catania 0

Bologna, Italy - Bologna scored twice on either side of halftime to cruise to a 4-0 win over Catania at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on Sunday.

Tiberio Guarente put Bologna in front in the 19th minute before Alberto Gilardino doubled the lead five minutes before halftime.

Gilardino picked up right where he left off after the restart, completing his brace in the 61st minute. Panagiotis Kone wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time to lift Bologna to seven points on the season, moving one point shy of Catania.

Pescara 2, Cagliari 1

Cagliari, Italy - Pescara played with an extra man for much of the second half on Sunday and took advantage, claiming a 2-1 win over Cagliari at the Stadio Sant'Elia.

Christian Terlizzi gave the visitors the lead five minutes after halftime, but it wasn't until Luca Rossettini's red card four minutes later that the game began to take shape. Vladimir Weiss bagged what turned out to be the game- winner in the 76th minute as Mauricio Ferreira Pinilla converted a penalty kick eight minutes from time.

Pescara has won two straight and is unbeaten in its last three league games, while Cagliari is last in Serie A with three successive defeats.

Udinese 0, Genoa 0

Udine, Italy - Scoring chances were at a premium at the Stadio Friuli on Sunday as Udinese and Genoa played to a 0-0 draw.

After beginning the campaign with two successive losses, Udinese is unbeaten in its last four league games to improve to six points on the season.

Genoa is unbeaten in its last three Serie A contests, improving to eight points and climbing into the top-half of the table.

Inter Milan 2, Fiorentina 1

Milan, Italy - Inter Milan climbed into third place on Sunday after a 2-1 home win against Fiorentina.

Diego Milito converted from the penalty spot in the 17th minute to put the Nerazzurri ahead, while Antonio Cassano doubled the advantage in the 34th when he beat goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano with a shot at his near post.

Fiorentina responded before the break with a header from Romulo, who beat goalkeeper Samir Handanovic following David Pizarro's cross.

But the Viola was reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Gonzalo Rodriguez picked up his second yellow card, dooming the visitors to a second defeat this season.
