Gary Hooper scored and Adam Cummins contributed an own goal and was sent off as Celtic defeated 10-man Motherwell, 2-0, on Saturday at Fir Park to move into first place in the Scottish Premier League.

Hooper opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, and Cummins turned the ball into his own net three minutes later to send Celtic on its way to fourth win of the season. Celtic moved one point ahead of Motherwell, which suffered its first defeat to surrender the top spot.

Cummins compounded his forgetful day when he was sent off in the 56th, but the ensuing penalty was missed by Scott Brown to leave the short-handed hosts some chance of a comeback that never developed.

Steven Thompson scored twice as St. Mirren edged Ross County, 5-4, in a nine- goal thriller that included six second-half strikes. Rocco Quinn had a brace for Ross County.

Cillian Sheridan scored a hat trick as Kilmarnock downed Hearts, 3-1, to climb to third and within two points of first place.

Gavin Rae scored the match-winner in the 71st as Aberdeen beat Hibernian, 2-1, to extend its unbeaten streak to seven matches.

Also Saturday, Richie Foran scored twice as Inverness beat Dundee United, 4-0, for its first win, and St. Johnstone gave Dundee its third straight loss, 3-1.
