The San Diego Padres announced on Friday the extension of a player development contract with their Triple-A affiliate through the 2014 season.

"We are glad to continue our relationship with Tucson," said Padres general manager Josh Byrnes. "Triple-A is an important level in the development of a player and we value Tucson as a critical part of our developmental process."

The Padres used the Portland Beavers as their Pacific Coast League farm team from 2001 through 2010, but decided to uproot the franchise and place it in Tucson, Ariz., for the 2011 campaign.

Tucson finished with a 56-88 record in 2012.
