St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte was named National League player of the week for the period ending Sept. 23.

Motte is the first relief pitcher to receive the honor since Huston Street won the award in 2009. The right-hander notched his NL-leading 40th save of the season on Sunday after posting four saves earlier in the week. Motte struck out 10, gave up just two hits and didn't allow a run over five appearances.

Others considered for the weekly award were Motte's teammate Kyle Lohse, Ian Desmond of the Washington Nationals, Martin Prado of the Atlanta Braves and Wilin Rosario of the Colorado Rockies.
