Wood topples Glasson with late rally in Hawaii

Oahu, HI – Willie Wood birdied the final two holes on Sunday to come from behind and beat Bill Glasson at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.

Wood closed with a 6-under 66 to finish at 14-under-par 202. It was his second win in three weeks on the Champions Tour.

"This one feels a little different than the one in New York because I had won. It wasn't nearly the pressure. Felt much more comfortable and things just fell into place," Wood said in a televised interview.

"I had a great back nine. I didn't make a bogey the whole tournament, and that's something I don't think I've ever done."

Glasson, who led by four entering the final round, had five bogeys and three birdies over the last eight holes en route to an even-par 72 in the final round. Glasson took second at minus-13.

Peter Senior birdied the final four holes to grab third place at 12-under-par 204. Senior closed with a 3-under 69 at Kapolei Golf Course.

Tom Lehman (67) and David Frost (69) shared fourth place at minus-11.

Glasson birdied the first to push his lead to five. He parred the next seven holes before converting a birdie effort in the ninth to stretch his lead back to four after Wood started to make a move.

Wood birdied the third, sixth and ninth in the group ahead of Glasson to make the turn at minus-11.

Glasson, whose last PGA Tour sanctioned win was at the 1997 Las Vegas Invitational, started to struggle on the final nine. He traded a bogey for a birdie from the 11th.

After he tripped to a bogey on 13, Wood rolled in an 8-footer for birdie at 14 to get within two. Glasson responded with a birdie on the 14th to regain a 3- stroke lead.

Wood scrambled for a par on the 15th and also parred 16. Glasson had a tough lie in a fairway bunker on 15 and he came up short of the green with his second shot.

Glasson failed to get up and down for his par. He missed the green at the par-3 16th and that led to another bogey, which cut his lead to one.

Wood chipped to three feet at the 17th and tapped that in for birdie. Glasson responded with his own birdie at 17 to move one ahead.

Moments later, Wood drained an 18-foot birdie putt at the last to match Glasson at 14-under. Glasson found the fairway off the tee at 18, but pulled his approach shot left of the green.

Glasson chipped to eight feet, but missed the par putt to the right. That gave Wood his second win in the last three Champions Tour events.

"The putts continue to fall and I got a little bit lucky with the way Bill finished," Wood said on TV.

NOTES: Wood, who collected $270,000 for the win, was the only player to go bogey-free for the tournament...Despite the loss, Glasson earned his seventh top-10 finish of the season on the Champions Tour...After a 2-week break, the tour will be in North Carolina for the SAS Championship, where Kenny Perry won by one last year.
