Guthrie goes low to win Boise Open

Boise, ID – Luke Guthrie fired a 6-under 65 on Sunday, and that helped him come from behind to win the Boise Open by four shots.

Guthrie, who won for the first time on the Web.com Tour, finished at 22-under- par 262. His total of 262 was a new tournament record.

"It was an awesome day. I played real solid," Guthrie said in a televised interview.

Jon Mills set the old mark of 263 in 2007 and was tied by Hunter Haas in 2010.

Michael Putnam, who had at least a share of the lead after the first three rounds, closed with an even-par 71 to share second at minus-18. He was joined there by Scott Gardiner (69), Steve Wheatcroft (69) and Richard H. Lee (66).

Tyrone Van Aswegen posted a 70 on Sunday to take sixth at 17-under-par 267.

Jeff Gove (70), Billy Horschel (68) and Shawn Stefani (63) tied for seventh at minus-16 at Hillcrest Country Club.

Guthrie got off to a fast start as he 2-putted for birdie on the second and followed with an eagle from about 30 feet out on the third to take the lead at minus-19.

He stumbled to a bogey on the fourth, but came back with a birdie on No. 6 to take the lead for good.

"It was great to get off to that fast start with the eagle on three and a good, solid birdie on two," Guthrie said on television. "The bogey on four was kind of a nervous bogey. From then on in I decided to be confident over every shot and whatever happened happened."

Guthrie moved to 20-under with a 6-foot birdie effort on the 10th. After four straight pars, he got up and down for birdie on the short par-4 15th. Guthrie made it two in a row as he converted a 7-foot birdie try on No. 16. He parred the last two holes to seal his first tour win.

"Luckily, I've been in this situation a couple times now. Finally happy to come through and win a tournament," said Guthrie on TV. "It has been a while, going back to college since I've won a tournament. So it's nice to get a W."

Putnam fell one back when he bogeyed the first. He came right back with a birdie on No. 2, but dropped another stroke at the seventh. Putnam failed to make a rally as he closed with 10 pars and a birdie over his last 11 holes.

Gardiner had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine. He birdied the 12th and 15th to get within two, but he parred the last three holes.

Wheatcroft had three birdies and two bogeys in the first five holes. He posted just one more birdie the rest of the way.

Lee rallied from off the pace to share second place. He eagled the second before birdies at three and five got him to 17-under. He stumbled to a bogey on No. 7, then traded a birdie for a bogey from the 11th and again from the 14th.

At the par-5 16th, Lee converted an eagle try to get within two at minus-18. He parred the last two to end there.

NOTES: Guthrie earned $130,500 for the win and that helped him jump into the top-5 on the money list in just six tour starts ... Casey Wittenberg tied for 10th and that helped him remain atop the tour's money list.
