Reading, England – Andre Villas-Boas collected his first win as Tottenham manager on Sunday as Jermain Defoe scored two goals in a 3-1 Spurs win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
Defoe netted the lone goal of the first half in the 17th minute when Aaron Lennon dashed down the right wing and dropped the ball back for the striker to roll inside the far post with a first-time shot.
The visitors nearly made it 2-0 before the break, but Gylfi Sigurdsson's goal- bound effort was cleared off the line by Reading defender Alex Pearce.
Kyle Walker set up Tottenham's second goal with 20 minutes to play when he got into the area on the right and pulled the ball back for Gareth Bale, who was set up near the penalty spot and who scuffed his shot but still managed to beat goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
The points were safe two minutes later for Spurs when Defoe stole the ball in midfield and carried it all the way into the area before firing home a left- footed shot.
Reading managed to score a consolation goal as the game entered stoppage time with Hal Robson-Kanu coming off the bench to score, but the Royals have a lot of work to do after claiming only one point from three games.
