Sao Paulo, Brazil – Palmeiras parted ways with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari on Thursday, ending his second stint with the club just over two years after he returned to the post.
Scolari, 63, previously led Palmeiras from 1997-2000, when the club won the Brazilian title, Copa Libertadores and Copa Brazil. He then coached Brazil to the 2002 World Cup crown.
After winning the World Cup, Scolari coached Portugal from 2003-08, Chelsea from 2008-09 and, after a brief stint in Uzbekistan with Bunyodkor, returned to Brazil with Palmeiras.
Scolari had a number of coaching stints before his breakout with Palmeiras, but failed to reproduce in his second spell. Palmeiras did win the Copa just two months ago, but is just three points off the bottom of the Brasileiro.
The bottom four teams are relegated and Palmeiras is seven points out of 16th place and safety.
