San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley was named the National League player of the month for August.

Headley hit .306 with a league-best 31 RBI in 28 games in August to win his first monthly award. He scored 20 times and slugged .611, eighth in the league.

The hard-hitting third baseman led the NL with nine go-ahead RBI and tied for the league-best with five game-winning RBI.

Headley, whose 10 home runs tied him atop the leaderboard, became the second player in Padres history to lead the majors in home runs and RBI in a month, joining Ken Caminiti.

San Francisco's Buster Posey, Angel Pagan and Joaquin Arias, Miami's Giancarlo Stanton, Cincinnati's Todd Frazier, Milwaukee's Ryan Braun, Los Angeles' Luis Cruz and St. Louis' Jon Jay were also considered for the award.
