Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oilers and forward Jordan Eberle agreed to terms on a six-year contract extension on Thursday.
The pact will pay the 22-year-old right wing $36 million for the duration. It comes on the heels of a $42 million extension over seven years given to another young talent, Taylor Hall, eight days ago.
"I'm happy for the organization and I'm proud of Jordan because he deserves it," said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini at a press conference announcing the deal. "He's a young man totally committed to what we want to accomplish here. Now to have Taylor and Jordan both locked in for some time here with the Oilers, it certainly feels good."
Eberle had one year remaining on his current deal, which will pay him $787,000 for the upcoming season, according to NHLnumbers.com. He was set to become a restricted free agent next summer once his original three-year, entry-level deal expired.
Edmonton's 22nd-overall pick in the 2008 draft made his NHL debut in 2010, striking for 18 goals and 43 points in 69 games. He improved across four categories last season, collecting 34 scores, 42 assists and 76 points in 78 contests.
"With Taylor getting his done last week, I was pretty anxious. I'm happy to be an Oiler. It's exciting," Eberle added. "We want to stay here and be the core guys on this team to help us win. "We have a lot to prove still. Team-wise, we haven't really achieved much yet, and that's our focus right now."
