The New England Patriots inked tight end Aaron Hernandez to a lengthy and lucrative contract extension.

The Globe reported on Monday that Hernandez was the beneficiary of a $40 million extension over five seasons, with $16 million guaranteed.

A Florida product, in his second pro season, Hernandez posted 79 receptions for 910 yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games for New England in 2011.

Over 28 games with the Pats, the native of Bristol, Connecticut has totaled 124 catches for 1,473 yards and 13 scores.
