The Pittsburgh Pirates placed pitcher Chad Qualls on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with irritation of his left big toe.

Qualls allowed seven runs -- six earned -- in 7 2/3 innings over nine games with the Pirates after they acquired the right-hander from the New York Yankees in exchange for first baseman Casey McGehee on July 31.

Over 52 games this season with the Phillies, Yankees and Pirates, Qualls owns a 2-1 record and a 5.24 earned run average.

Pittsburgh also added pitcher Hisanori Takahashi to the active roster on Sunday.

Takahashi, who was claimed on waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Friday, went 0-3 with a 4.93 ERA in 42 appearances with the Angels this season.
