Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Fifth-seeded Andy Roddick defeated James Blake in an all-American second-round match Monday at the $550,000 Winston-Salem Open, a final U.S. Open tune-up.
Roddick beat Blake by a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6) margin on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University.
In other second-round action, Belgian David Goffin rallied past 10th-seeded Serbian Viktor Troicki 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, seventh-seeded American Sam Querrey was leading Santiago Giraldo 6-3 when the match was suspended due to rain.
Donald Young halted a dismal 17-match losing streak by picking up his first victory since February with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 first-round victory over Argentine Leonardo Mayer. The all-time record for consecutive losses on the men's tour is 21 by Young's fellow American Vincent Spadea.
Also in the opening round, Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci beat former Aussie Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-5, 3-1, retired, and Poland's Lukasz Kubot doused former top-10 star Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Bellucci will meet top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his next outing.
Additional first-round wins came for Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky, Slovak Martin Klizan, Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, Robin Haase of the Netherlands, American qualifier Michael McClune, Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu, and German qualifier Benjamin Becker.
North Carolina native John Isner defeated France's Julien Benneteau in last year's Winston-Salem finale.
The 2012 champion will collect $73,930.
