Stefani fires 64 to win Midwest Classic

Overland Park, KS – Shawn Stefani fired a 7-under 64 on Sunday to earn a 2-stroke win at the Midwest Classic, his first title on the Web.com Tour.

Stefani began the day in a tie for 13th place, four shots off the lead. But he turned in a flawless round at Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate, carding seven birdies -- including five on the back nine.

That put him at 17-under-par 267, and nobody else matched the score.

"The win hasn't really sunk in yet, but this is something you dream about as a kid," Stefani said. "This is the best thing that has ever happened to me."

Luke List (67) and Russell Henley (68) shared second place at minus-15.

Third-round leader Matt Weibring began his round with a double bogey, and seemingly rebounded when he made the turn at 17-under after draining five consecutive pars.

However, he bogeyed four of five holes from the 11th to fall out of contention. Weibring carded an even-par 71 and tied for fourth, at minus-14

James Nitties, the 2011 champion, also struggled, though his bogeys came right after or before birdies. He carded a 2-over 73 to end at 11-under, good enough for a share of 11th.

Weibring and Nitties were two of a handful of players who were near the top of the leaderboard Saturday, but who struggled Sunday.

Christopher DeForest and Jamie Lovemark were tied for third at the end of round three, but finished in Nitties' group. Second-round leader Bryan DeCorso was even further back in a share of 20th.

Their struggles opened the door for any number of players to grab the victory, and Stefani took advantage with a big round.

He sank birdies at four and eight to make the turn at minus-12, then soared to the top of the leaderboard by playing great golf on the back side.

Stefani birdied No. 10, then made two in a row from the 12th. That put him at 15-under, and birdies at 15 and the last gave him the winning number.

List made six birdies, but also carded two bogeys to fall short of first. Henley, who was tied for third after Saturday, simply didn't make enough birdies to challenge for the title. He carded three on the front side, but just one on the back nine, which also included a bogey.

NOTES: Stefani pocketed $99,000 for the victory...Prior to Sunday, Stefani's best finish this season was a tie for ninth at the Panama Claro Championship in the first week of March ... Next week, the Web.com Tour heads to Knoxville, Tennessee for the News Sentinel Open. Kirk Triplett won last year's event, but has since moved on to the Champions Tour.
