Red Bull New York preserved its unbeaten home record on Friday, edging out the Houston Dynamo in a 2-0 win at Red Bull Arena.
New York and Houston squared off last week at BBVA Compass Stadium with the Dynamo taking a 2-0 win preserve their respective unbeaten record at home this season.
But the Red Bulls reversed the result this time around as Holgersson's strike, which was set up by Tim Cahill's first MLS assist, lifted the club to the top of the Eastern Conference with 41 points on the season.
Jan Gunnar Solli chipped in with a late insurance goal, which also was assisted by Cahill.
Both sides battled for the opening goal in the first half, but even play and squandered chances saw them enter halftime scoreless.
Cahill nearly opened his MLS scoring account in the 54th minute when Thierry Henry nodded a long-ball down to the top of the box. The Australian took a touch to set up a shot, but he hammered his effort over the bar.
It was a sign of things to come though, as Cahill had a hand in creating New York's opening goal seven minutes later.
Roy Miller launched a long throw-in to the back post at the hour-mark. Cahill was arriving to direct the delivery back across goal where Holgersson was waiting to turn the ball in past Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall.
It was the first goal that Houston has conceded from open play since June 30, but it was not the last of the match as Henry latched on to a through ball from Cahill in second-half stoppage time and centered a pass to Solli on the counter-attack. The Norwegian was unmarked in the box and converted his simple scoring chance by slotting past Hall for his third goal of the season.
The result not only snaps a two-game losing skid for the Red Bulls, but it puts a stop to Houston's eight-game unbeaten streak. It was the Dynamo's first loss since falling to the Montreal Impact 4-2 at the Stade Saputo.
Both clubs to return to action with home matches on August 19. The Red Bulls will welcome the struggling Portland Timbers to Red Bull Arena while the Dynamo will look to keep their unbeaten home record alive when they host the Columbus Crew.
