Raleigh, NC – The Carolina Hurricanes have rewarded forward Jeff Skinner with a six-year contract extension worth more than $34 million.
Skinner will earn $4.35 million for the 2013-14 season and $6 million for each of the following five years.
"Jeff is a cornerstone player for our team, and his long-term commitment to the Hurricanes is great news for our franchise and our fans," said Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford in a statement. "At 20 years old, he is still in the very early stages of his career, and we felt it was important to ensure he would be spending much more of it in Raleigh."
Skinner won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie for the 2010-11 season when he notched 31 goals and 32 assists for 63 points. He followed it up with 20 goals and 44 points in 64 games last season, missing 16 games because of a concussion.
The Hurricanes selected the Ontario native with the seventh overall pick of the 2010 draft. He has 107 points in his first 146 NHL games.
