The Washington Nationals claimed shortstop Cesar Izturis off waivers from Milwaukee and placed infielder Mark DeRosa on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Izturis, 32, was acquired as an insurance policy. DeRosa has been troubled by a wonky groin and was finally shut down and infielder Ian Desmond is still on his way back from a torn oblique. The veteran shortstop hit .235 with two homers, six doubles and 11 RBI in 57 games for the Brewers this year.

The Nats also designated pitcher Atahualpa Severino for assignment. The 27- year-old Dominican was 3-0 with a 2.72 earned run average in 40 games for Triple-A Syracuse in 2012.

In addition, Washington announced it had come to terms with four international free agents: pitcher Ramses Rosario and outfielders Aldrem Corredor, Darryl Florentino and Luis Guzman.
