Flushing, NY – The New York Mets announced left-handed reliever Tim Byrdak has a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder and could have surgery.
Byrdak, who was put on the disabled list Aug. 2, was one of three Mets players to have recent MRIs, the others being catcher Rob Johnson and outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
Byrdak had complained of soreness in his pitching shoulder. Although surgery is a possibility, the Mets said a specific treatment for his injury has not been determined.
In 56 relief appearances this season, Byrdak has compiled a 2-2 record with a 4.40 ERA.
Johnson injured his right hand in Sunday's 7-3 loss at San Diego. He has been diagnosed with a contusion to the right hand and will be treated for swelling. Johnson, who is batting .244 in 15 games for the Mets, is day-to-day.
Nieuwenhuis suffered an injury to his right foot in an International League game in Buffalo on August 3. He's been diagnosed with a partial tear of the plantar facia in his right foot and will report to Port St. Lucie for a rehabilitation assignment.
In 91 games this year, Nieuwenhuis is batting .252 with seven homers and 28 RBI for the parent club.
