Rocha takes second-round lead at Reno-Tahoe Open

Reno, NV – Alexandre Rocha amassed 16 points in the Modified Stableford scoring system Friday to take the lead at the midway point of the Reno-Tahoe Open.

The Modified Stableford scoring system awards eight points for double eagles, five for eagles, two for birdies, zero for pars and subtracts one point for bogeys and three points for double-bogey or worse.

Rocha finished 36 holes at Montreux Golf and Country Club with 24 points and is two clear of J.J. Henry, who totaled 12 points on Friday, and John Mallinger, who tallied 11 points.

Rocha recorded an eagle, seven birdies and three bogeys on Friday.

First-round lead Andres Romero picked up seven points in round two and is tied for fourth place with Arjun Atwal, who collected 14 points. The pair has 21 points.

Matt Bettencourt picked up 12 points Friday and is alone in sixth with 20 points.

John Daly had nine points in the second round and he's seventh with 19 points.

Rocha flew out of the gate on Friday with three straight birdies, starting at his first hole, the 10th. He eagled the par-5 13th and just like that, Rocha picked up 11 points in four holes.

Things fell apart a bit for the Brazilian. He bogeyed the 14th and 16th holes, but got back on track with a birdie at the par-5 closing hole.

Rocha birdied the next par 5, the second, but immediately lost a point thanks to a bogey at the par-3 third. He was down to 20 points, but soared into the lead with birdies at Nos. 5 and 8.

Rocha is going through a very difficult 2012 season.

He's only made six cuts in 15 starts, and in those six tournament where he played the weekend, Rocha finished in the top 70 just once and that was a share of 49th two weeks ago at the True South Classic.

But this is as good as any for Rocha to have a breakout week. The game's best are in Akron for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, so this could be an opportunity for the 34-year-old.

J.B. Holmes earned the most points of round with 17. He moved up 76 places into a tie for eighth with Hunter Haas, who had eight points on Friday, with 18.

NOTES: Rocha made it through Q School after an unimpressive 2011 rookie season...He could become the first Brazilian to win on the PGA Tour...The 36- hole cut came at seven points and Camilo Villegas, Shaun Micheel, Rocco Mediate, Rich Beem and Mike Weir all missed the cut.
