London, England – Becky Hammon scored 14 points and keyed a late run, as Russia rallied for a 58-53 win over Canada in the women's basketball tournament.
Hammon, who plays for the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars and was born in South Dakota, became a Russian citizen prior to the Beijing Games. She helped Russia to a bronze medal four years ago.
Canada built a 43-37 lead after three quarters on Saturday, but managed only 10 points in the fourth. The Canadians led by 10 with 6 1/2 minutes remaining, but Russia closed the contest with an 18-3 run.
Hammon's bucket inside capped a string of 10 straight for Russia to tie it at 50-50 and, following a free throw from Canada's Natalie Achonwa, scored again to give the Russians the lead for good. She followed with another basket with just over a minute to play for a 54-51 edge and added a jumper with 17 seconds remaining for a five-point margin.
Kim Smith made two free throws for Canada with nine seconds left, but Anna Petrakova drained two from the stripe to seal it for the Russians.
Petrakova finished with nine points and Alena Danilochkina scored 10 in the victory.
Smith led Canada with 20 points. The Canadians made just 8-of-25 shots from inside the three-point arc and connected on 8-of-19 from beyond it.
