The Kansas City Royals have signed three- time All-Star catcher Jason Kendall to a minor league contract.

Kendall played the 2010 season with the Royals before undergoing surgery that cost him the final month of that campaign and all of 2011.

The 38-year-old backstop batted .256 in 118 games during the 2010 season after signing a two-year contract the previous December.

Kendall is a career .288 hitter in 2,085 games with Pittsburgh (1996-2004), Oakland (2005-07), the Chicago Cubs (2007), Milwaukee (2008-09) and Kansas City (2010). He is fifth all-time in baseball history with 2,025 games caught and was an NL All-Star in 1996, 1998 and 2000 during his tenure with the Pirates.

The Royals have assigned him to Double-A Northwest Arkansas of the Texas League.
