San Francisco, CA – Houston Astros infielder Jed Lowrie suffered a right ankle sprain and had to be helped off the field during the third inning of Saturday's matchup with the San Francisco Giants.
Lowrie, who is batting .253 on the season, was covering second base on a grounder up the middle by Melky Cabrera when the injury occurred.
Jose Altuve snared the ball and flipped to Lowrie, who dropped the toss as Gregor Blanco slid into the bag and appeared to spike the 28-year-old infielder in the right ankle.
"He slid into me and my foot got caught underneath his and I twisted it," said Lowrie about the play.
Lowrie fell to the ground, where he remained for several minutes before limping off the field with his arms around a pair of Houston staff members.
"Right now it just feels like my whole leg, it's just really sore," said Lowrie after the game. "They did some x-rays, but I haven't really heard the results of those yet."
Acquired in the offseason from Boston, Lowrie has appeared in 80 games for the Astros and has 14 homers, 36 RBI and 38 runs scored.
