Carolina Hurricanes backup goaltender Brian Boucher suffered a shoulder injury and will miss the next 4-to-6 months.

Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford revealed the news on Thursday, adding that the injury will require surgery, which is slated to occur in the next few days.

The well-traveled netminder was 1-6-1 with a 3.40 goals against average in 10 games (eight starts) for the Hurricanes last season.

Carolina also has Justin Peters waiting in the wings. Peters went 10-13-4 with a 2.77 GAA in Charlotte of the American Hockey League in 2011-12, also going 2-3-2 with a 2.48 GAA in seven games for the Hurricanes.

Complicating matters is the fact that Peters is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Despite his setback, Rutherford said he was not looking to buy out Boucher's contract, which has one more year remaining.
