Omaha, NE – Michael Phelps earned a little revenge against Ryan Lochte, bettering his rival in the final of the men's 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic trials.
Phelps, who lost to Lochte in the final of the 400m individual medley on Monday, touched the wall Wednesday at 1:45.70, a mere 0.05 seconds faster than Lochte.
The two have nevertheless qualified for the Olympic team in both events.
Missy Franklin, just 17 years old, set an American record to win the 100m backstroke and reach her first Olympics with a time of 58.85 seconds. Rachel Bootsma, 18, finished second to join Franklin in London, while Natalie Coughlin, the two-time defending Olympic champion in the event, missed out with a third-place finish.
Matt Grevers and Nick Thoman both qualified for the Summer Games in the men's 100m backstroke. Grevers finished first with a time of 52.08 seconds, and Thoman's time of 52.86 edged David Plummer by 0.12 seconds.
The women's 100m breaststroke was the last final of the night, and Breeja Larson and Rebecca Soni both earned spots in the Olympics with a 1-2 finish. Larson narrowly won with a time of 1:05.92, just 0.07 seconds ahead of Soni.
