The Minnesota Twins signed outfielder Byron Buxton, the second overall pick in the 2012 first-year player draft, on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Buxton was the top ranked high school prospect in the country by Baseball America after leading Appling County to the Georgia Class AA State Championship this season.

Buxton batted .513 with three home runs, 17 doubles, 38 stolen bases and 35 RBI during his senior year. He also went 10-1 with five saves and recorded 154 strikeouts over 81 innings.

The Twins' highest draft pick since Joe Mauer was taken first overall in 2001, Buxton will report to the Gulf Coast League Twins.
