Derek Gillespie fired a four-under 66 on Friday to take the second-round lead at the Times Colonist Island Savings Open, the first event of the season on the Canadian Tour.

Gillespie finished 36 holes at seven-under 133 and is one stroke clear at Uplands Golf Club.

First-round leader and tour rookie Andrew Rogue managed an even-par 70 on Friday and fell into a tie for second place with Lucas Lee (69) at six-under par.

Cory Renfrew (67), Paul Peterson (68) and Gordy Scutt (68) share fourth at minus-five.

Gillespie was flawless on Friday. He netted two birdies and seven pars over his opening nine, then did the same thing on the back nine. Gillespie's two second-side birdies came at 10 and 11, and he held on with seven straight pars to close out his round.

Matt Marshall shot a one-under 69 and is alone in seventh at minus-four.

Nick Taylor (70), Kent Fukushima (67), Brad Tilley (69) and Oilver Tubb (70) are knotted in eighth at three-under par.

NOTES: Gillespie owns two Canadian Tour wins, but has none since 2003...The 36-hole cut fell at two-over with 67 players making it to the weekend.
