Knuble won't be back with Caps

Washington, DC – The Washington Capitals won't have at least one veteran presence on their roster next season.

The Post revealed on Wednesday that Knuble was told by Capitals general manager George McPhee that the club will not re-sign him.

Knuble, who will turn 40 the day after the NHL's free-agency period begins, totaled just six goals and 18 points in 72 games, and was a career-worst minus-15 last season. It marked the first time since 2001-02 he did not reach the 20-goal plateau.

One of the veterans who was chafed under interim head coach Dale Hunter, Knuble saw his responsibilities and playing time dramatically decreased as the season wore on. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

A Michigan product and Toronto native, Knuble came to Washington as a free agent in the summer of 2009 and was welcomed back to DC on a one-year extension in April of 2011. He will leave America's capital after 59 goals and 52 assists in 220 regular-season tilts.

All told, in 15 NHL seasons, he has racked up 274 goals and 540 points in 1,040 appearances with the Red Wings, Bruins, Flyers and Capitals -- contributing 14 scores and 16 assists in 65 playoff games.
