The Boston Red Sox optioned pitcher Daniel Bard to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday.

Bard has endured a difficult transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation this season. In 11 games -- 10 starts -- he has posted a 5-6 record with a career-worst 5.24 ERA.

In his most recent outing -- Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays -- Bard lasted 1 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on a hit and six walks.

Before this season, Bard operated exclusively out of Boston's bullpen since joining the team in 2009. Last year, he posted a 3.33 ERA in 70 relief appearances.

Also on Tuesday, the Red Sox activated outfielder Darnell McDonald from the 15-day disabled list.
