Los Angeles, CA – The Kings scored twice on Martin Brodeur in the second period of Game 3 on Monday and are 20 minutes away from building a 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Alec Martinez and Anze Kopitar had the goals and Jonathan Quick stopped nine shots in the period, giving him 16 for the game.
The Kings lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 after a pair of 2-1 overtime wins in New Jersey.
Early in the second, Brodeur had the puck pinned beneath his left pad during a scramble but Dwight King hammered away at it and Martinez rushed in for a last swipe, finally getting it over the goal line 5:40 in.
Brodeur was angry and seemed to argue that the whistle should have been blown to stop play.
Though it appeared at full speed that King had scored, Martinez was given the goal and King the primary assist for his work.
Brodeur was sliding from his left to his right when Kopitar scored to make it 2-0 with 4:53 left. Dustin Brown found his teammate with a cross-ice pass and Kopitar beat Brodeur from the low left circle on a bang-bang play.
Earlier, Quick made seven saves and the Kings fought off a New Jersey 5-on-3 in a scoreless first period. Brodeur made six saves in the period and had 13 through two.
Game 4 is Wednesday in LA.
