Baltimore Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis will have surgery on Friday to repair a fractured hamate in his right wrist.

He will have the surgery in Sarasota, Florida and will be out up to four weeks and he will be placed on the disabled list for the first time in his seven- year career.

Markakis originally suffered the injury last week and aggravated it in his final at-bat in Tuesday's game in Toronto. He had an x-ray on Wednesday that turned out negative, but an examination by specialist Dr. John Hand on Thursday afternoon revealed the break.

On the season, the 28-year-old is batting .256 with eight homers and 26 RBI over 50 games.
