Manchester United confirmed on Wednesday that midfielder Paul Scholes has signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at Old Trafford through the 2012-13 season.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said earlier this month that Scholes had agreed to terms on a new deal, which has formally been completed.

The 37-year-old retired last summer but was convinced to return in January by Ferguson, with the former England international playing a key role in United's title push, which ultimately came up short.

Scholes scored four goals in 17 games after his return, while United also announced on Wednesday that goalkeeper Ben Amos has signed a three-year contract to remain with the team.

The 22-year-old started four games in all competitions for the Red Devils this past season.
