Groningen appointed Robert Maaskant to be its new manager on Wednesday, replacing the fired Pieter Huistra.

Huistra was let go after guiding Groningen to 14th place in the Eredivisie this season, with Maaskant joining the club on a one-year contract.

The 43-year-old has spent time in charge of Roosendaal, Willem II and NAC, while also leading Wisla Krakow to the 2010-11 Polish league title.

"After the departure of Pieter Huistra, we had a clear preference for a candidate from outside of the club," Groningen's technical director, Henk Veldmate, said.

"We believe our current situation calls for a sporting breath of fresh air and we think, as a coach and a person, Robert Maaskant is the right man to bring us that. He has extensive experience at the highest level and that may be of value for our squad."
