The Kansas City Royals placed second baseman Chris Getz on the disabled list and purchased the contract of pitcher Will Smith from Triple-A Omaha.

Getz left Monday night's game against the Yankees after aggravating a left ribcage injury while sliding headfirst into second base trying to stretch a single into a double. He originally suffered the injury last Wednesday against the Orioles in a collision with Chris Davis. He missed two games before returning last Saturday.

Getz is hitting .277 in 30 games this season for Kansas City.

Smith was 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in 51 2/3 innings for Omaha this season.

Kansas City also transferred pitcher Blake Wood to the 60-day disabled list.
