John Utaka scored on each side of halftime as Montpellier overcame two long delays to edge Auxerre, 2-1, on Sunday at the Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps to claim its first-ever Ligue 1 title.

Olivier Kapo scored in the 20th minute as last-place and relegated Auxerre put the title in doubt, but Utaka tied the game in the 31st minute and secured the win in the 78th minute.

Montpellier entered the final day of the season in need of a just a point, but finished off a surprise title season in style, despite two delays to the match because of fans throwing objects on the field.

The second delay came midway through the second half, but Montpellier returned to the pitch and scored the winner when Utaka converted to the bottom right to seal Montpellier's 25th win of the season and the title.

PSG could have caught Montpellier on the final day as it edged Lorient, but Montpellier, a club that just moved up to Ligue 1 a few seasons ago, was not to be denied.

PSG 2, Lorient 1

Lorient, France - Javier Pastore and Thiago Motta scored in the second half as PSG downed Lorient, 2-1, on Sunday at the Stade du Moustoir, but missed out on the Ligue 1 title.

PSG needed a win and for Montpellier to lose to snatch the title on the final day of the season, but although it erased a first-half goal from Kevin Monnet- Paquet, it did not get any help from Auxerre.

Montpellier won 2-1 over Auxerre, which finished last and was relegated. PSG finished three points off the top, a disappointing finish after it spent well over $100 million on transfers between the summer and winter transfer windows.

Brest 1, Evian 0

Annecy, France - Issam Jemaa scored five minutes into the second half as Brest posted its first road win this season, 1-0, over Evian at the Parc des Sports on Sunday to seal its place in Ligue 1 next season.

Brest was among a group of eight teams still in danger of relegation, and with nine losses and nine draws on the road, pulled out a huge win to seal survival with a 15th-place finish. Evian finished ninth.

Lille 4, Nancy 3

Lille, France - Eden Hazard, who has said he will transfer to Manchester City or Manchester United this summer, scored a hat trick to finish the season with 20 goals and lead Lille to a 4-3 win over Nancy on Sunday.

Lille already had third place secured, but Hazard scored three times inside 35 minutes to leave the defending champions just eight points off the top. Nancy, which was already safe, finished in 11th place.

Nice 4, Lyon 3

Lyon, France - Esmael Goncalves scored the deciding goal as Nice downed Lyon, 4-3, on Sunday at the Stade de Gerland to secure its Ligue 1 survival on the final day of the season.

Nice was one of eight teams still in danger of relegation entering the final day, but it overcame Lyon to finish 13th and four points from danger. Lyon had previously secured a fourth-place finish.

Rennes 5, Dijon 0

Rennes, France - Jires Ekoko scored twice as Rennes relegated Dijon with a 5-0 win at the Stade de la Route de Lorient on Sunday on the last day of the Ligue 1 season.

Rennes climbed one place to finish sixth, just one point behind Bordeaux for fifth place and a European place. Dijon finished in 19th place and two points off the bottom.

Bordeaux 3, St Etienne 2

Saint Etienne, France - Cheick Diabate scored twice and Yoan Gouffran notched the match-winner as Bordeaux defeated St Etienne, 3-2, on Sunday at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard to secure Europa League play with a fifth-place finish.

Bordeaux finished just ahead of Rennes and St Etienne for the European place, which was still up for grabs on the final day of the season. St Etienne fell to seventh place in the final standings.

Sochaux 1, Marseille 0

Montbeliard, France - Ryad Boudebouz scored early after halftime and Sochaux edged Marseille, 1-0, on Sunday at the Stade Auguste Bonal to win its third in a row to close the season to avoid relegation from Ligue 1.

Sochaux was buried in the bottom three just weeks ago, but the three straight wins helped it finish in 14th place and three points clear of the drop zone. Marseille finished in 10th place.

Ajaccio 2, Toulouse 0

Toulouse, France - Johan Cavalli scored twice as Ajaccio downed Toulouse, 2-0, on Sunday at the Stadium Municipal de Toulouse to avoid relegation on the last day of the Ligue 1 season.

Ajaccio entered the match in 18th place, and needed to climb at least one spot to survive. Cavalli's double helped Ajaccio move to 16th and three points from danger. Toulouse finished eighth.

Valenciennes 3, Caen 1

Valenciennes, France - Gael Danic and Renaud Cohade scored in the second half as Valenciennes sealed its own survival and relegated Caen, 3-1, on Sunday in Ligue 1 at the Stade du Hainaut.

Valenciennes was one of eight teams still in the relegation battle on the last day of the season, but the win lifted it to 12th place in the final standings. Caen slipped one spot to 18th place, and will drop with Dijon and Auxerre.
