New York, NY – The 100-game suspension for Colorado Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo has been rescinded for issues nearly identical to the ones resolved in Ryan Braun's overturned ban.
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced the decision Monday and said Alfonzo, currently on the roster of the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs, is eligible to play immediately.
Alfonzo was suspended Sept. 14 after a second positive test for performance- enhancing drugs.
MLB said his penalty was rescinded by mutual agreement with the players union and after his appeal raised issues similar to the Braun case.
"It is not anticipated that any other future cases will be impacted by the circumstances raised in the grievances of these two players," MLB said in a statement.
Braun, of course, was the first major league player to have a positive test overturned after it was found the man who collected his urine sample waited two days to ship it to a testing facility. The collector said he was only following protocol after he couldn't find a nearby FedEx office that was open.
The reigning NL MVP was facing a 50-game ban.
