New York, NY – After the Colts selected Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the draft, Indianapolis took his favorite weapon, tight end Coby Fleener, with the second pick in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft on Friday.
The Colts drafted Fleener No. 34 overall to fill a void left by nine-year veteran Dallas Clark, who the club released in the offseason after selecting him with the 24th overall pick in the 2003 draft.
The Colts are the first team to draft a quarterback and tight end from the same school in the draft since the Texans, who picked Michigan QB Drew Henson and TE Bennie Joppru back in 2003.
The Rams had two of the first seven picks in the first round and decided to go offense with the first pick, selecting wide receiver Brian Quick from Appalachian State University.
St. Louis then made a splash, selecting Florida-transfer Janoris Jenkins out of North Alabama. The cornerback was a three-year starter at Florida before transferring to North Alabama after multiple off the field issues.
St. Louis used its third second-round pick, 50th overall, to select running back Isaiah Pead out of Cincinnati.
The Ravens added some youth to their vaunted defense, selecting Alabama defensive end Courtney Upshaw with the third pick in the second round while Jacksonville drafted defensive end Andre Branch from Clemson sixth.
The Jets moved from 47th overall to 43rd to add some speed at the wide receiver position, selecting Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill, who ran a 4.3 40-yard dash at the combine.
The Chicago Bears sent a fifth-round pick to the Rams, moving up five spots in the second-round to select wide receiver Alshon Jeffery from the University of South Carolina. Jeffery joins Brandon Marshall in Chicago, which acquired the free agent receiver in the offseason from Miami for third-round picks in 2012 and 2013.
The Patriots, who addressed their defense with their first two selections, continued the trend in the second and third rounds, selecting safety Tavon Wilson from Illinois with the 48th overall pick in the draft and defensive end Jake Bequette of Arkansas at 90th overall.
New England was slated to be done after Friday's third round but made a deal with Green Bay, sending the 62nd overall pick to the Packers in exchange for the 90th and 163rd overall picks.
Green Bay sent a fourth-rounder to Philadelphia to move up from 59th overall to 51, selecting defensive tackle Jerel Worthy from Michigan State, while the Eagles nabbed defensive end Vinny Curry of Marshall with their pick.
The Packers then used the 62nd overall pick they received from the Patriots to add defensive back Casey Hayward from Vanderbilt.
Defensive tackle Devon Still was the first Penn State player drafted, going No. 53 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals, leaving LSU wide receiver Rueben Randle as the last player in the green room until he was selected with the final pick in the second-round by the New York Giants.
The Denver Broncos used the 57th overall pick to select Peyton Manning's possible successor before Manning even starts a game, drafting quarterback Brock Osweiler from Arizona State.
The Houston Texans traded out of the second round, trading their second- and seventh-round picks to the Buccaneers for their third- and fourth-round picks. The Texans used the third-rounder to select DeVier Posey from Ohio State while Tampa Bay used the second-round selection to add linebacker Lavonte Davis out of Nebraska.
Houston then swapped picks with the Eagles in the third round, moving up to 76th overall to take offensive guard Brandon Brooks from Miami (OH) while the Eagles used the 88th overall pick to select quarterback Nick Foles from Arizona.
Denver moved up twenty spots in the third round, sending a third- and fourth- round pick to Cleveland for the 67th overall pick to take running back Ronnie Hillman from San Diego State University.
The Redskins used the Bills' No. 71 overall pick to select guard Josh LeRibeus from Southern Methodist University, swapping picks with Buffalo and sending away a seventh-rounder.
The San Diego Chargers gave Miami a sixth-round pick this year to move up five spots from 78th to 73rd overall and grabbed LSU safety Brandon Taylor.
The Ravens traded the 91st and 164th selections to acquire the Falcons' 84th overall selection and took Temple running back Bernard Pierce, who had 27 touchdowns last season.
The Saints made their first appearance of the 2012 Draft late in the third- round after being stripped of their 2012 second-round draft pick in the aftermath of the bounty scandal. New Orleans selected defensive tackle Akiem Hicks out of Division III Salve Regina in Rhode Island.
Oakland also made its first pick of the draft in the third round, selecting offensive guard Tony Gergstrom of Utah with the final pick of the third round.
Other notable selections included wide receiver Ryan Broyles, who Detroit selected 54th overall out of Oklahoma, running back LaMichael James, who San Francisco selected 61st overall out of Oregon, Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson, who went 75th overall to Seattle, and wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who went 83rd overall out of Rutgers.
