The Chicago Cubs traded outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash considerations to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden and a player to be named later.

The 34-year-old Byrd is hitting just .075 with two RBI in 13 games this season. He hit .276 with nine homers and 35 RBI in 119 contests last season, his second with the Cubs.

Byrd, who has also played for Philadelphia, Washington and Texas, is a career .278 hitter.

The 25-year-old Bowden set major league highs in several categories last year with 20 innings pitched. A 2005 graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Ill., his career record stands at 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in 39 games.

The Red Sox also designated infielder/outfielder Nate Spears for assignment. He appeared in four games with the Red Sox since being selected to the major league roster on April 15.
