Bronx, NY – Angels pitcher Scott Downs has avoided a trip to the disabled list, but the team did call up right-hander David Carpenter from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Downs took a spike to his right ankle while covering first base in the seventh inning of Thursday's 10-9 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Prior to Friday's game against the Yankees, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto revealed that postgame X-rays and an MRI exam in New York on Friday revealed no structural damage to Downs' ankle.
The 36-year-old Downs is considered day-to-day, but he will most likely sit out this weekend's series in New York.
Carpenter, who was chosen by the Angels in the ninth round of the 2009 draft, posted a 0.57 earned run average in 44 appearances for Class-A Advanced Inland Empire and Double-A Arkansas in 2011.
The Angels also optioned utility man Alexi Amarista to Salt Lake and transferred outfielder Jeremy Moore from the 15-day disabled list to the 60- day DL.
