Oakland, CA – Oakland Athletics reliever Joey Devine will miss the 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery for the second time.
The A's said Tuesday that Devine's procedure, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida, included ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, an ulnar nerve transposition and a removal of dead tissue in the flexor tendon.
The right-hander had been placed on the 15-day disabled list last month but will now sit the entire season.
Devine, 28, went 1-1 with a 3.52 earned run average in 26 appearances for the A's last year. He had missed the previous two seasons after having Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow in April 2009.
He is 8-3 with one save and a 2.75 ERA in 93 relief appearances over five big league seasons with Atlanta and Oakland.
