The Los Angeles Galaxy traded midfielder Paolo Cardozo to Chivas USA on Tuesday for defender David Junior Lopes.

L.A. picked Cardozo in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and he made 17 appearances last season for the MLS Cup champions. Cardozo had nine starts last season, and started his one appearance for the Galaxy this season.

But with L.A. struggling defensively after the loss of star center back Omar Gonzalez to an ACL injury, the Galaxy acquired 29-year-old Brazilian Lopes for 22-year-old Uruguayan Cardozo.

Lopes played eight games, including seven starts, for Chivas last year. He had not appeared in a match yet this season for Chivas USA, which has two wins and three losses after five matches.

L.A. has just one win and three losses after four games, and sits last in the Western Conference. The Galaxy are allowing an average of two goals per match, one season after they gave up less than one per game.
