The Houston Astros have placed shortstop Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list just hours before Friday's season-opener against the Colorado Rockies.

The move is retroactive to March 29, a day after Lowrie sprained his right thumb in a Grapefruit League game against Miami.

Acquired in the offseason from Boston, Lowrie batted .333 with two home runs and seven RBI in 14 games this spring.

To fill the switch-hitter's roster spot, the Astros purchased the contract of infielder Brian Bixler from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Bixler hit .242 in the spring.
