Deuces Wild in Day Two as Lehigh and Norfolk St. Pull Off Upsets

If day one of the first round seemed somewhat boring to you, you were not alone. On Friday, the normalcy went out the window as the first round wrapped up.

History was made on the second day of the first round, twice. In NCAA Tournament history, only four 15 seeds have defeated their two seeded opponent in the first round.

In a span of a few hours Friday evening, two more teams pulled off that feat.

Mizzou went down first, dropping a tight contest to Norfolk State 86-84. The game was all tied up at 38 at halftime, but in the final stretch Norfolk State was able to sneak past Missouri with timely shooting and clutch rebounds.

Senior Kyle O’Quinn was the difference maker, having a career game with 26 points and 14 rebounds. The seven seed Florida will have to focus on limiting him to try to end the Spartans’ season in their second round matchup on Sunday.

If Norfolk State did not have fans and analysts buzzing enough, shortly thereafter Lehigh shocked Duke 75-70 in a game that the Blue Devils clung on for dear life as long as they could.

Lehigh (15 seed) will face Xavier (10 seed) on Sunday.

While those were the shockers, numerous other higher seeds went down on Friday. Eight teams lost to opponents with worse seeds, versus only two upsets on Thurday.

What to watch out for:

-One seeded Syracuse, absent Fab Melo, the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, will have their hands full with an 8-seeded Kansas State squad.

-Ohio State will try to fend off a hot Gonzaga squad that routed West Virginia in the first round.

-Last year’s Cinderella squad, VCU, will take a 4-seeded Indiana team that is in the tournament for the first time in four years

Many brackets were busted today, but avid basketball fans cannot deny the fun of watching the Madness unfold. Enjoy the holiday, and tune in to see which schools get lucky as round two kicks off at 12:15 PM.
